Children’s rights have gained a more and more prominent place in the Human Rights debate over the past 20 years. However children still suffer from violations of their most basic rights. Especially as unaccompanied children (separated from their families), they become particularly vulnerable to abuse and neglect. This book analyses the international legal framework protecting unaccompanied children in specific situations; children in armed conflict; refugee children; internally displaced children; migrant children; and victims of trafficking. It argues that a rights based approach is the only sustainable way both to prevent violations of children’s needs in the first place and to help them once they have been subject to abuse. The book offers a critical analysis of existing international Conventions with relevance to the specific groups of children – both the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other relevant Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law instruments. It further looks at UN positions and relevant EU legislation regarding unaccompanied children.
                                                                                                                                                                              
L’AUTORE:
Kristina Touzenis has an MA law degree from the University of Copenhagen. She teaches human rights law at various Masters in Italy and is currently consultant on children’s rights for the Mediterranean Institute for Childhood
